A Cloud withdrew from the Sky- Emily Dickinson

A Cloud withdrew from the Sky
Superior Glory be
But that Cloud and its Auxiliaries
Are forever lost to me

Had I but further scanned
Had I secured the Glow
In an Hermetic Memory
It had availed me now.

Never to pass the Angel
With a glance and a Bow
Till I am firm in Heaven
Is my intention now.

About the author

Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) is an American female poet who is born in Amherst, Massachusetts.  She  attended a female school in South Hadley when She was young, but her severe homesickness made her go back to her hometown in a year. She mostly stayed in her house, and not many people came to visit her. But her thought about poetry were created through the people she came into close relation. One person that made an enormous impact to her poetry life was Reverend Charles Wadsworth. After his leaving in the 1860s, many people believe this was the point when Emily Dickinson's poem became more gloomy and the tone sounds a lot depressed. Many of her poetry were dark and gloomy, for it tells about how she feel in her loneliness. But there are other poems written by her which acts as life- supporting writing. Emily Dickinson's time in her home increase a lot in the 1860s. She died in her hometown of Amherst, Massachusetts in 1886, but her death allowed many of her writings to be revealed and be well-known

Personal Response

This poem has a dark tone of loneliness as I read each words of the poem. For a text-to-text connection, the poem has a similar tone color with a quote by Mark Twain about how all people are related with the moon. For a text-to-self connection, the poem pretty much relates to the emotion about me when I blankly stare at the sky for a peaceful quiet time, or when I have a depressing moment. Pretty much, it’s amazing how there are many poems that relate to me personally or about my life. For a text-to-world connection, the poem would have the relation with depressed people or for people who look at the sky when they are on a long thought process for anything. One phrase that stood out the most in this poem was “But that Cloud and its Auxiliaries Are forever lost to me” Because this phrase sounds like as if they clouds were filled with music, but the person could not hear that music and let it flow out into thin air. The thing I liked about the poem is that the poem has a good expression with emotional tone color. What I would suggest in the poem is to put a bit more detail in the poem to emphasize the reader’s perspective into the poem to have a deeper meaning. Allowing that to happen would just be amazing when readers try to read this poem. The deeper emotional feeling would impact the poem’s stanzas as the readers read through each stanza.

TP-CASTT analysis

TITLE

The title A cloud withdrew from the Sky pretty much tells me about how lonely this poem is. The sky is covered with clouds, showing that it is filled with something. But the title express how lonely the sky is without the clouds around it.I never tried reading this particular genre of a poem, so I am new to this type. But I guess the poem tells how lonely the poet is feeling as she was writing this.

PARAPHRASE

A Cloud withdrew from the Sky
Superior Glory be
But that Cloud and its accesories
Are gone from me.

Had I but further scanned
Had I secured the Glow
In a deep and heavy Memory
It had taken an advantage toward me now.

Never to go beyond the Angel
With a small glance and even a gentle Bow
Until I am able to be in Heaven
This is my intention for now.

CONNOTATION

1. speaker- the author who is lonely  audience- none
2. imagery- sight (scanned, glance), taste-none, touch-none, smell-none, hear-none
3. repetition- none
4.structure- Rhyme scheme- ABCBABCBABCB

ATTITUDE

Dark, gloomy, sad, lonely, depressed, grieving. The tone in the poem never had any shift and the emotional feeling in the poem remains the same.

SHIFT

1st quatrain (line 1-4)- the speaker talks in a dark tone about how the cloud withdrawing from the sky    has no impact on her life
2nd quatrain (line 5-8)- the speaker tells about a deep memory that she tried to think more about, but that time took an advantage(?) over her life.
3rd quatrain (line 8-12)- the speaker suddenly puts herself in a perspective of her afterlife.

TITLE

After going through the poem the second time, I didn't feel a change on what the title says, but I did think again on the loneliness view. I just thought of the loneliness point of view only on the speaker, but  after reading the poem for the second time putting myself in the speaker's perspective, the poem was trying to show that it is not only lonely, but also it wanted people to know what kind of life she is living in.

THEME

1. Don't ever think you're alone, for there is always someone besides you

2. Never think too short about life, for there may be a day where you can shine
3. what goes out must come back

Courage- Corey Fauchon

Courage is what makes us
Courage is what divides us
Courage is what drives us
Courage is what stops us

Courage creates news
Courage demands more
Courage creates blame
Courage brings shame

Courage shows in school
Courage determines the cool
Courage divides the weak
Courage pours out like a leak

Courage puts us on a knee
Courage makes us free
Courage makes us plea
Courage helps us flee

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
This poet is not very known so much, so there is no information about this person. But I hope he/she becomes famous in the future.

PERSONAL RESPONSE
This poem tells about how courage can be good for us, but also shows how too much courage can ruin us. It also tells about how courage can divide people, so everyone won’t feel equal. For a text-to-text connection, the poem relates to a movie I saw that shows how a fat girl didn’t have courage with herself, so she got a surgery and became pretty. But then her courageousness led her to become a completely different person, which made her lose all the people who were around her. For a text-to-self connection, the poem reminds me of a friend I had before he left to Ohio. He didn’t have courage for himself, but I helped him get the courage he needed, and then he went overboard with the courage. So I had a long talk with him to balance his level of courage and his level of good friend. For a text-to-world connection, the poem can pretty much tell about how people would think about the word ’courage’ from good and bad. One phrase that stood out the most in the poem is “Courage determines the cool courage divides the weak” because the phrase basically tells the truth about the division between the courageous people to the weak people. I like the part how the poem is full of the truth about courage. I would suggest the poem to have a better description about how people who got their courage start to become different from their former self, and to the moment how they slowly change back to their former self.

TP-CASTT

TITLE
The title would tell that this poem would tell about courage, maybe the good things and the bad things about courage itself. This poem may have been written for people without big courage to start building courage.

PARAPHRASE
Courage is what creates us
Courage is what separates us
Courage is what guides us
Courage is what put an end to us

Courage creates new issues
Courage makes us want something more
Courage creates trouble
Courage builds up and causes shame

Courage shows in school
Courage determines the cool
Courage divides the weak
Courage pours out like a leak

Courage puts us on a knee
Courage makes us free
Courage makes us plea
Courage helps us flee

CONNOTATION
1. Structure- 4 quatrain and end rhyme, internal rhyme, rhyme scheme- a-a-a-a-b-c-d-e-f-f-g-g-h-h-h-h
2. Speaker- a woman telling the advantage and disadvantage of courage, audience- the readers
3. Figurative language- simile (pours out like a leak)
4. imagery- sight(divides, shows, pours out, puts us in knee, makes, helps, creates, demands more), touch- none, taste- none, hear (trouble, leak), smell- none

ATTITUDE
powerful, teaching, dramatic. The tone varies on each stanzas. The first stanza tells how courage is great to have. Then the second stanza tells how courage can be bad. The third stanza tells how courage shows the division between the strong and the weak. And the fourth stanza tells what courage can do.

SHIFT
1st quatrain (line 1-4)- the tone starts softly for it tells how to build courage
2nd quatrain (line 5-8)- the tone color changes for it tells how courage can change people
3rd quatrain (line 9-12)- the division between the people with and without courage is shown clearly, even in school
4th quatrain (line 13-16)-  tells how courage can be bad and how it should be fixed.

TITLE
After reading the poem and thinking about the title for the second time, I was able to see that the title does not tell about what courage is, but the word 'courage' is like a lesson to us. The title is there to give us a thought about courage. This can help people how to control their courage to maintain a equal right with people

THEME
1. no one will always stay on the top forever
2. whether you are weak or not, we are still humans
3. We were created to be equal

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
This author is not known as much. She is not famous right now, and the internet source does not tell where was this author born in, not even her small info. But some reactions from other people i saw in a comment about her poem was that her poem has a big impact in life, whether the poem is not based on life. But besides that, having a biography about her would be great.

PERSONAL RESPONSE
This poem talks about how music can be not only aesthetic, but music can be a mixture of art and pure beauty blended with each other. For a text-to-text connection, the poem reminds me of the movie “August Rush”, for the poem and movie both relate to music, and about how music is not only about the sound, but also the beauty within music. The whole idea of the poem and the movie both match each other. For as text-to-self connection, this poem would make me want to think deeper about music. As a fellow musician in the Manta Band, knowing a lot about music would be the most basic thing I would have to know. For a text-to-world connection, music lovers would have this kind of feeling, compared to people who don’t enjoy listening to music that much. Maybe the poem can influence people to find the hidden beauty behind music. One phrase that stood out the most in this poem was “Music opens the soul”, for it expresses the emotional thought of music allowing people to forget about the stressful thoughts and enjoy listening to music. The amazing ability music has is just astonishing. I like the part of the poem about the description of music as just plain sound, into the description of how music can bring joy to people and also astonish people who listen to music. I would suggest the poet to put a bit more description about how music can astonish a lot of people instead of the poem being written like a one-person perspective.

TP-CASTT

The title is plain, but the whole idea of the poem is hidden within the title of the poem. I never written or read this kind of poem, but the poem was really fun to read. Since this poem is based on music, I really enjoyed reading this kind of poem

2.Speaker- a person describing what music actually is. Audience- the readers
3.figurative language- none
4.Imagery- Sight- none, Touch- none, smell- none, taste- none, hear (combines sound in a joyful way, pitch, melody, harmony, rhythm, sweet sound)

ATTITUDE
joyful, excited, passionate, emotional, peaceful, calm. The tone of the poem changes in each stanza. It starts off as a soft tone, but as it goes on, the tone becomes powerful and the poem tells more detail about what music is.

SHIFTS
1st quatrain (line 1-4)- the speaker starts off with a calm tone and tells the basic thing about music
2nd quatrain (line 5-8)- the tone becomes passionate, as the description of music become emphasized
3rd quatrain (line 9-12)- tone changes to a bright side as the speaker tells about the sweet beauty in music
4th quatrain (line 13-16)- the description about music becomes simple, just like the beginning.
5th quatrain (line 17-20)- the description has power in the tone, even though it was described shortly
6th quatrain (line 21-24)- the words used in this stanza has an emotional flow with the words used
7th quatrain (line 25-28)- this part of the stanza is spoken in a 'grandioso' (musical term meaning fanfare, mostly used in marches) emotion. The power and emphasis is all covered in one stanza.

The second time I read this poem, I thought about the title again. The title is just plain, but the title shows the hidden meaning of music on the outside already. I thought it was hidden within the title at first, but after reading it again, I was able to find out the secret behind the title of this poem.

Alone in the Night- Jordan Sampson

I imagine how it would be if I were up there with no air
All alone in the night
The stars makes it bright
And brings back my sight
While I'm all alone in the night

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
This author is not famous right now. I believe this author is a teenager or a college student right now. The biography tells that this poet wrote his poem starting from 2010. I hope this person becomes famous in the future so that more information about this poet would be known.

PERSONAL RESPONSE
This poem tells about darkness, but I believe the setting sounds like it was taking place in space. It was talking about how you can’t see anything in the dark, but the stars brighten the view, allowing you to see anything in the night. For a text-to-text connection, the poem reminds of a movie that said something about how everything is dark in the night, but the stars will brighten the view for the little child. So the child did not feel too scared to sleep in the dark. For a text-to-self connection, the poem reminds of when I was a kid, and I was afraid of the dark, but my parents would say God will always be with me, even in the dark. He would be the bright light I need when I need the light in the dark. This pretty much helped me overcome the fear of darkness. For a text-to-world connection, many parents would pretty much sympathize with the poem, for the poem relates to how the parents can tell their kids about not being afraid of the dark, for there is always an available light in the sky. I really liked the part where the phrase in the poem tells about how the bright light from the stars bring back the sight. It sounds similar like ‘Amazing Grace’. I would suggest the poem to be longer. Not because there is not much details available, but I want to know more about how the poet would represent the darkness as, compared to what light is.

TP-CASTT

TITLE
The title is based on a pretty dark and grieving tone, and the title gives you the feeling that the title sounds lonely. I thought this kind of poem was pretty eerie to read at first because of the title, but the detail was not that bad.

PARAPHRASE

I imagine how it would be if I were up there with no air
All alone in the night
The stars would make the sky shine bright
And brings back my lost sight
While I'm all alone in the dark, gloomy night

CONNOTATION
1. structure- 1 quatrain, rhyme scheme- abbbb
2. speaker- the poet putting his view in a dark night audience- the readers
3. Figurative language- none
4. Imagery- Sight (bring back my sight, stars, shine bright), taste- none- touch- none, hear- none

ATTITUDE
the speaker's tone is not so dark, but it has the tone color of lost hope in it for the first two line of the poem. But the tone changed to a bit brighter side starting from line 3.

SHIFT
1st quatrain (line 1-5) The speaker's tome had no energy in it, but the tone starts to be confident as each lines of the poem is read.

TITLE
After going through the poem, I didn't feel any difference in the title, but I would say that the poem is so dark, but it tries to describe how life would be like being alone in the night,

THEME
1. Even in the dark, there will always be a light
2. Do not be afraid of the dark
3. Think every moment like 'Amazing Grace'

Why I love you- Udiah (witness to Yah)

You give to me hope
And help me to cope
When life pulls me down
You bring me around

You teach me to care
And help me to share
You make me honest
With kindness the best

From you I learned love
With grace from above
It's for you I live
And I want to give

You are the reason
That fills each season
When I hear love I think of you
You are my world and best friend too

I love you because you are so kind, thoughtful and caring
I love you because you are so pleasant, lovely and sharing

You made me the man I am
Thank you

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

There is no information about this author, but it tells that the author was born in 1959 in the USA. Except for that, there are not many information about the poet yet. Maybe more details about this poet will come out in the later future.

PERSONAL RESPONSE

I have nothing to say about this poem. This poem tells about love, but the thing is that this poem exactly matches my feeling. I’ll explain that in the text-to-self connection. The poem basically is saying how the person the man loved changed the man to become stronger than before. For a text-to-text connection, the poem has a lot of relating dialogues that happens throughout love story movies. For a text-to-self connection, the poem sounds like it’s exactly talking to me or it’s me talking to me in a mirror. The poem generally relates to how I feel toward a certain girl I like. Though I am not in a relationship with her, I have to say, she changed me to become a bit confident and stronger than the former me. One day, I would love to be in a relationship with her. For a text-to-world connection, many guys would feel the same toward their lover. Women have the power to change men to a different person (in a positive way). I really liked this poem because the poem was ‘speaking’ to the readers, and it is saying the truth in every single way. I have no other suggestions to put in this poem. This poem sounded perfect to me. Single or not, the poem has a similar advice of what it feels like to be in a relationship or planning to become a couple with the lover. Reading this poem give me goose bumps. It’s almost as if the poet was reading my mind and then he create a poem about this.

TP-CASTT

The title says it all. It represent about why the person loves this person, and it tells about how the person he/she loves changed the person into a stronger person. The title also tells you that this poem would be based on a description on why he/she loves her.

3. Imagery- sight (think about you, friend, lovely, teach), touch (bring me around), taste- none, hear (hear love), smell- none

ATTITUDE

sincere, bright, peaceful, joy, enchanting. The tone of this poem is very bright, for it does not tell about depressing moments, but about love and about how good it was. I never written a love poem, but I've read a lot of love poem, so this kind of poem is very familiar to me.
